Merged or Large Course Grading in Speedgrader

Grading large classes (50+ students) can be time-consuming. Canvas simplifies this process by allowing you to create student groups for efficient grading using SpeedGrader. This guide shows you how to set up groups and distribute grading workloads.

If you mark the following in your settings panel for the course, you will be able to grade by the groups you create. This is useful for situations where you have multiple merged courses. 

Note: You will not be able to activate SpeedGrader in the traditional sense. You will be prompted with the following: "Due to the size of your course, you must select  a student group before launching SpeedGrader."

Step-by-Step Instructions

Creating Group Sets

1. Click "People" in the left navigation menu
   
2. Click "+ Group Set"
   
3. Name your group set and configure settings
   Tip: For merged courses, consider naming groups after the original course sections.
4. Choose your group structure:
   • Self-sign-up: Students choose their groups
   • Automatically assign: Random student distribution
   • Manual assign: You create and assign groups

Assigning Students to Groups

1. Click "+Group" in the Groups panel
   
2. Complete the group details and click "Save"
   
3. Click the "+" icon next to a student's name
   
4. Select the appropriate group
   
5. Repeat for all students
   

Grading with Group Filters

1. Click "Grades" in the course navigation
   
2. Click "Apply Filters"
   
3. Select "Student Groups"
   
4. Choose your desired group
   Note: This will only display students from the selected group.
5. Click an assignment cell, then the arrow to open SpeedGrader
   
6. Grade students in the filtered group
